Sunset, slippers, and a little Tasmanian wilderness magic.

Chasing Daylight

The drive from Kingston felt like a small adventure itself. As the paved roads slowly gave way to rough gravel near Snug, the evening sky glowed golden. While most hikers were already returning, our little group was just stepping onto the trail, chasing the last light of the day.

While most hikers were already returning, our little group was just stepping onto the trail, chasing the last light of the day.
Apart from me, nobody had hiked before. My wife and our Sydney flatmate bravely tackled the trail in slippers while I proudly wore the only proper hiking shoes.

We walked, laughed, drank water, took photos, and spent an hour wondering if we were actually heading the right way.

One Trail, Zero Experts

Apart from me, nobody had hiked before. My wife and our Sydney flatmate bravely tackled the trail in slippers while I proudly wore the only proper hiking shoes. We walked, laughed, drank water, took photos, and spent an hour wondering if we were actually heading the right way.

Worth the Walk Anyway

Snug Falls finally appeared unexpectedly. Though smaller than imagined, Wai Wai noodles, endless jokes, group photos, and laughter echoing through the gorge stole the show.

Snug Falls finally appeared unexpectedly. Though smaller than imagined, Wai Wai noodles, endless jokes, group photos, and laughter echoing through the gorge stole the show. A selfie of three people standing together at the base of the same waterfall gorge, with the towering sandstone cliff and thin waterfall filling the background. The man on the right - bearded, wearing a blue crew-neck sweater - takes the photo. To his left stands a woman in a black top with a warm smile, and behind her in the center is another woman in the striped patterned sweater, slightly further back. The cliff face rises dramatically behind them with its layered orange-rust sandstone, green moss, and vegetation. The diagonal fallen log is visible on the left side of the frame. The three are close together, expressions warm and happy. The image has the feeling of a triumphant end-of-hike moment. A playful, candid selfie taken in the forest near the waterfall area. In the foreground, a young woman in a black top holds a colorful object - what appears to be a brightly colored snack wrapper or toy - toward the camera, with a mischievous half-smile and wide eyes. Beside her on the right, the bearded man in the blue sweater and backwards black cap grins at the camera. In the background, slightly out of focus but clearly photo-bombing deliberately, a third woman in the striped sweater sits on a boulder with her mouth open wide in a dramatic expression and one hand raised making a peace sign. Dark green ferns and mossy rocks fill the background. The mood is silly, spontaneous, and full of laughter.
Darkness arrived quickly on the return walk. Kangaroos rustled through the bush while strange sounds echoed around us. Acting fearless while secretly nervous, I led the group back to the car.

We reached home tired, happy, and with one very sore first-time hiker who could barely walk.
